5 Questions Every DTC Founder Should Ask a Manufacturer
Suze Dowling
Here are five I never skip when evaluating a new factory - and why each one matters.
1. What certifications do you hold?
ISO, FDA, GOTS, or category-specific standards matter if you want to sell in certain markets - or if your customers expect sustainability claims.
2. What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
This determines your flexibility. A factory that demands high MOQs can choke cash flow in the early stages.
3. Can I conduct a third-party inspection?
Good manufacturers say yes without hesitation. Bad ones make excuses.
4. Who are your subcontractors?
If they can't tell you, that's a red flag. Transparency prevents unpleasant surprises in quality or lead times.
5. What are your lead times at different volumes?
A three-week delay can ripple into a lost season. Ask upfront and get it in writing.
The best factories don't just tolerate these questions, they welcome them. It shows you're serious about building a partnership. The full Choosing the Right Manufacturer bundle inside The DTC Operator has the complete vetting checklist and Manufacturer RFQ template. It's $49. [Get the bundle →]
